A year or so I did a review of Grill Masters Club which is a bbq subscription box. Every month they send a new box with some bbq sauce, rubs, and some other bbq related items.
Well, they aren’t the only player in the bbq subscription box game. BBQ Box also has a subscription box with rubs, sauces and the like so let’s give them a review.

BBQ Box is a barbecue subscription box that is shipped every month and contains one bottle of barbecue sauce, one bottle of bbq rub, some sort of edible (jerky, meat sticks, etc.), some wood chips, and a recipe card showing what you can do with your box. Some months there could be some sort of accessory or grilling tool in there as well.
BBQ Box offers month to month subscriptions for $24.99 or you can prepay for multiple months (3, 6, or 12) that will bring the price down to as low as $22.99 per month. Personally I would go with the 3 or 6 month subscription. One month isn’t really long enough to decide if you like it and any more than 6 months and you will have a LOT of sauce and rub in your cupboards. If you sign up for BBQ Box and use code CARNIVORE25 you can also save 25% on your order. If you choose the month to month you will only save on your first month but if you do the multiple month option you will save on all the months.
You can see the box is pretty full. Everything is well packed so you shouldn’t end up with any broken bottles or anything like that.
Here is what I had in my box. Keep in mind the boxes change month to month. You might have months where you love everything in your box or there could be months that aren’t your favorite. But from what I have seen there is more good than bad.
My box contained a bottle of Salt Lick Garlic Dry Rub, a bottle of Salt Lick Honey Pecan bbq sauce, some hot soppresatta meat sticks, some apple wood chips, and a little silicon basting brush. These are full size bottles of rub and sauce too, not just small sample sizes. The rub was 12 ozs and the sauce was 14 ozs.
I tasted the sauce and rub and they were both very good. The rub tasted very salty so if you use a rub like that be sure to not add any more salt to your meat but it had a good flavor overall. I could see that rub being great on some chicken wings or thighs or on some ribs. The honey pecan sauce had some very small pieces of pecans in it as well which is different. But it tasted great. I will definitely use that sauce the next time I throw some chicken on the grill.
Quality-wise I was very pleased with the contents of this BBQ Box. I have had some sauces and rubs in the past that I have tasted and thrown away but both of these will get some use. When you sign up for BBQ Box the first box they send you is their “Welcome Box” which is a standard box that everyone gets. But after that the selection will change month to month.
Is it a good value? Well, most decent bbq sauces will run $6-12 per bottle. This isn’t a bottle of Heinz sauce you get at the grocery store either. The sauces they offer are usually from smaller producers from around the country. There might be some bigger ones in there from time to time but they are much better than the standard grocery store fare. A bottle of rub will run $10-15. The snacks they include will probably be $5 and then another buck or two for the wood chips they have in there. So all in all you are looking at about $25 worth of stuff if you just bought them retail. With the boxes running about $25 per month it is a decent value. But add in the 25% you save with the code CARNIVORE25 it turns into a pretty good deal. Shipping will run about $9 or $10 per month.
All in all I was happy with my box. I will probably pay for a 3 month subscription to see what kind of other rubs and sauces they will send. If you are someone who likes trying different sauces and rubs a bbq subscription box like BBQ Box is a great option. The BBQ Box also would make a great gift for Father’s Day, birthdays, Christmas, or other holidays too. If you need a gift for a backyard bbq enthusiast the BBQ Box is a great option.
I would say something like the BBQ Box is probably more geared towards the somewhat casual griller. If you are firing up the smoker a few times a week you most likely have rubs you already like or you make your own so I don’t know if something like this would be for you. But if most of your outdoor cooking is grilling up some regular weeknight dinners this bbq subscription box is great way to try a bunch of different rubs and sauces to see what you like.
