Let’s start with some truth: Tomahawk steaks are ridiculous and paying that much for a lot of bone is a waste of money. But you know what? There isn’t a steak on the planet that will look more impressive on your plate than a tomahawk steak. If you have wanted to try a tomahawk steak or give one for a gift your main problem is probably where to buy tomahawk steaks. Unless you have an epic butcher counter at your local grocery store you are out of luck buying local but luckily there are some great, reputable online retailers where you can buy tomahawk steaks.

What is a Tomahawk Steak?
Let’s start out with a simple explanation of what a tomahawk steak is. A tomahawk steak is a ribeye with the rib bone left on. In most cases the bone is frenched too meaning the meat is removed exposing the bone. Some butchers leave 3-4 inches and other leave up to about 10-12 inches of bone. In my opinion a good tomahawk needs a nice, long bone.
Where to buy Tomahawk Steaks
Like I mentioned previously, it is nearly impossible to find tomahawk steaks at your local grocery store or butcher. There are some good grocery store meat departments that could have them and I have even seen some people post they find them at Costco. But I have never seen any.
There are a number of great online sources for Tomahawk steaks and here are a few of my favorites:
Snake River Farms Tomahawk Steaks
Snake River Farms is one of the first places I saw that carried Tomahawk steaks. If you want the best of the best they will be your best option. Their American Wagyu tomahawks are absolutely amazing. When you buy a tomahawk steak you are pretty much throwing practicality and frugleness out the window so you might as well go top notch.
Their American Wagyu steaks have more marbling than prime steaks and are a cross between Japanese Wagyu cattle and Angus. It isn’t hyperbole to say the Snake River Farms American Wagyu steaks could be the highest quality steaks you will ever eat.
Snake River Farms has a few different options available and they are all 2 1/2 – 3 pounds:
- American Wagyu Black Grade Tomahawk: $135
- American Wagyu Gold Grade Tomahawk: $150
- American Wagyu Black Grade Dry Aged Tomahawk: $155
You can use code CARNIVORE and save 10% on your steaks too. Buy Tomahawk Steaks from Snake River Farms.
Holy Grail Steaks
Holy Grail Steaks has a number of great tomahawk steak options including some you won’t find anywhere else.
Pictured above is a carrot finished tomahawk ribeye. Carrot finished? Yep, they feed the cattle carrots to finish them instead of feed. The sweetness of the carrots definitely comes through in the taste of the meat. I cooked one up a few days ago:
That second picture is after I had cut it up and served it so it isn’t the best picture but you can see the bone and the quality of the meat. The texture on this steak was excellent and reminded me of a filet mignon. Even though it wasn’t as heavily marbled as a regular prime steak or American Wagyu it was definitely juicy. As far as the flavor, let me just say it is unique. It isn’t as beefy as most other steaks and the sweetness of the carrots comes through. There is a faint carrot taste that gets imparted to the meat as well.
The standard Santa Carota tomahawk is $79 and the “prestige” version which is more comparable to a prime steak is $99 so not bad prices at all for some quality beef. Along with the Santa Carota carrot fed beef they also sell some “upper prime” tomahawks and some American Wagyu tomahawks.
Through June 16th (the last day to order before Father’s Day) you can also use code CARNIVORE to save 15% and they offer free shipping on orders over $199. Buy tomahawk steaks from Holy Grail Steaks.
Meat n’ Bone
Meat N’ Bone is a butcher shop out of South Florida that has a huge variety of great steaks. For Tomahawk steaks they have a number of different options starting at $69.99 for a 32 oz “upper choice”. Beyond that they go up to a monster 50+ oz American Wagyu tomahawk for $189.99.
I have had a number of steaks from Meat N’ Bone and they have all been excellent. Buy tomahawk steaks from Meat N’ Bone.
Tomahawk steaks aren’t cheap but they are the most impressive steak you can eat. Personally I would never buy a Tomahawk steak for myself but they do make amazing gifts. Father’s Day is just around the corner and there isn’t a dad alive that wouldn’t love to throw one of these bad boys on their grill and take about a billion cheesy dad pictures with it. Steaks like this are perfect for bachelor parties, gifts for clients, to say congratulations on a big promotion, retirement parties, and pretty much any gift giving occasion you can think of. I especially like to give them to new dads when their babies are born.
I will have some more Tomahawk steak content coming soon including an explanation as to why they are so expensive and some tips on cooking them (in the mean time check out How To Cook a Tomahawk Steak from Jess Pryles) so stay tuned.
