When I was growing up there was a restaurant called Mr. Steak (don’t worry, this Mr Steak review isn’t of the restaurant) that I always wanted to go to. It was along the lines of Sizzler if you are familiar with that place. When we would go out to dinner as a family I would regularly suggest Mr Steak but my parents would usually decide McDonalds or IHOP or the local buffet. I liked all three of those places but Mr. Steak always intrigued me.
When I finally went it wasn’t quite the steak experience I was hoping for. It was a thin piece of top sirloin that was tough and not cooked well. A couple weeks ago I came across an online steak merchant called Mr Steak and I was intrigued. Was this related to the restaurant? Were they selling big packs of cheap sirloins? After visiting their site I was pleasantly surprised.

Mr Steak Review
After spending a minute on the Mr Steak site I could quickly tell this was in no way related to the old Mr Steak restaurant. They had some legit steaks like ribeyes, NY strips, and porterhouses. Which is good because a Mr Steak review with some crappy sirloins wouldn’t be fun.
Mr Steak sources their beef from a few small midwest ranches (most of them are between 200-500 head of cattle) and the meat goes directly from the ranches to the packer. In my experience smaller ranches like this generally produce much better beef than you will find at the grocery store or warehouse club.
I got three prime ribeyes to test out for this Mr Steak review. Left to right they are a boneless ribeye, a bone in ribeye, and a “cowboy” ribeye. All in all I was very impressed with the marbling on these steaks. They were on the high end of what I have seen from other prime steaks. And up on the top is a pack of brisket burgers I will talk about in a bit.
How do the Mr Steak steaks taste?
Well, I guess we need to cook these steaks up to find out how they taste. I decided to cook the boneless and bone in ribeye and save the big cowboy steak for another day. I also cooked a ribeye from Snake River Farms which I know is delicious for a comparison.
The Snake River Farms ribeye is on the left and the Mr Steak steaks are the two on the right.
The boneless ribeye was a bit thicker than the other steaks so I gave it a couple minute head start. Since the bone in ribeyes were only an inch thick (right about 1 lb each) I just grilled them direct rather than reverse searing. I dry brined the steaks the night before and threw them on my PK Grill with some Fogo lump charcoal providing the heat.
The PK Grill and Fogo lump charcoal are my go to setup for direct heat cooking like this. The coals are closer to the meat than on a Weber kettle. When I am cooking steaks like this I flip them every 30 seconds or so to keep the heat even. Forget those people who tell you only flip the steak once.
After a few minutes they were done. One thing I liked about the Mr Steak steaks was they both had some nice, big ribeye caps on them which is my favorite muscle on the steer.
Time to eat. Overall I was very pleased with the flavor and texture of these steaks. They didn’t have the mineraly, grassy taste of a grass fed steak. They didn’t have the buttery fattiness of an American Wagyu steak. But if you just like a good, beefy steak similar to what you would get at a top notch steakhouse these Mr Steak steaks are for you. I would definitely eat these again and can’t wait to cook up that third steak.
Comparing it to the Snake River Farms steak I think the Mr Steak steaks have a bit more “classic” steak flavor and the Snake River Farms steaks are a bit more “refined” (maybe delicate?) if that makes any sense. They are both good in their own rights and I can’t really say one is better than the other. They are just slightly different and delicious in their own way.
How Much do Mr Steak Steaks Cost?
Mr Steak has a number of different options so the costs can vary. One thing I do really like is they offer USDA prime and choice. If you want a great steak choose the prime. For more of an everyday steak you can go with the choice option.
The 20 oz prime bone in ribeye runs $46.50 ($2.33 per oz). Mr Steak is a bit more expensive compared to Porter Road (~$29 for a similar steak or $1.45 per oz) and as low as $21 at Snake River Farms ($1.31 per oz) when you buy a 10 pack.
The boneless ribeye runs $39.50 for a 16 oz steak and the Cowboy steak is $89 for a 32 oz steak. Mr Steak also carries other cuts like NY Strip, t-bone, porterhouse, filet, and flat iron.
One way to save a bit of money at Mr Steak is to buy one of their curated boxes and set up a monthly subscription to save $15. Mr Steak also regularly has some deals and coupons. For example, May 8-31 you can save 5% off orders over $200, 10% off orders over $75, and 15% off orders over $350. You can aslo use code BRISKETBURGERS through May 25th to get a free 4 pack of 1/2 lb burgers. That is a $25 value.
So what about those burgers?
Oh yeah, the brisket burgers. A couple months back I got a burger at a local barbecue restaurant that made burgers from their good brisket trimmings. It was one of the best burgers I have ever had. So when I saw Mr Steak had brisket blend burger I was definitely intrigued.
These 1/2 pound burgers looked great coming out of the package. Not sure what the fat content is but I would guess they are at least 75/25 and probably closer to 70/30. The grind was nice and coarse too which I like.
I started the burgers on the indirect side of my PK Grill and cooked them for a few minutes until they got to 100 degrees. Then it was time to blast them over the coals to get some color on the outside.
And of course some cheese goes on them. Those hot dogs were for one of the kids who didn’t think they wanted to eat a big, thick burger like this. His loss I guess.
All in all these were some great burgers. Big, thick, juicy, and beefy. I liked the bit coarser grind on these burgers than you would see on most ground beef. The high fat content also came through. I would put the ground beef right on par with Snake River Farms and Porter Road, both of whom I really like.
Based on the great beefiness and quality of the steaks and the great burgers I would definitely give Mr Steak recommendation if you are looking for some great steaks. With summer right around the corner these steaks are perfect for the grill, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, or just a great weekend dinner.
