Today was just like Christmas. My shipment of meat from Snake River Farms arrived at my doorstep!!! This is probably one of the best deliveries I have ever received. Let me say up front I received this shipment for free but looking at the prices they aren’t expensive at all for the quality you get.
Snake River Farms is one of the leading online meat sellers that ships their products from the Great Northwest. They have ranches in Idaho and Washington and sell both Waygu beef and their Northwest beef. One of my favorite things about Snake River is that they give you free shipping when you use the code FREEAFF. Most other online meat retailers charge at least $25-50 per order for shipping. That makes Snake River Farms an awesome deal.
I will get into how Snake River Farms sources and raises their meat in a future post but for now let me walk you through what was in this shipment.
First of all, the meat is packed in a cooler with dry ice so it will arrive to you frozen or at least mostly frozen. The package shipped on Monday and arrived at my doorstep on Thursday and the meat was frozen solid.
Opening this box was like opening a treasure chest. The beef contained therein was a sight to behold and I can’t wait to cook these bad boys up. Here is what everything looked like when I opened the cooler:
And here is everything all laid out:
Left to right here is what we have:
Northwest Beef Porterhouse – This sucker is about 40 ozs and has a huge piece of tenderloin on it. All in all the porterhouse is one of my favorite cuts and when you order from Snake River Farms they are only $43 when you buy 1-3 steaks, $35 when you buy 4-7, and it drops to only $32 when you buy 8. Even if you just buy one you are only looking at a bit more than $1 per oz. which is a great price. Buy a porterhouse steak like this at the grocery store and you will probably spend about $10-12 per pound and it will be nowhere near this size or quality.
This steak is probably plenty for two people but lets be serious. A 40 oz steak is the perfect size for any true carnivore.
4 Wagyu Filet of Ribeye – The filet of ribeye is the round middle portion of the ribeye which in my opinion is one of the best parts of the ribeye. One problem I have with regular ribeye steaks is there is too much extraneous fat on them which makes them a bit hard to eat. The filet of ribeye removes this problem by trimming all that away and just leaving a beautiful piece of meat.
If you don’t know about Wagyu beef you can come back later and read some future posts but basically it is the best of the best when it comes to steaks. The marbling in the meat gives the steaks a nice, buttery texture and the flavor is insane.
These are the 8 oz versions and these steaks also come in 6 and 10 ozs. They run $39 each when you buy one (but if you buy 4 the price drops to $30 and if you buy 8 or more they are only $27 each) which may sound expensive for 8 ozs of meat but if you compare the prices at Snake River Farms to other Waygu beef retailers you will see how great a price this is. Other similar steaks at other retailers sell for $50-70 each and the other guys charge $25 or more for shipping. At Snake River Farms you can get free shipping with code FREEAFF. That is an awesome deal.
4 Bacon Wrapped Filets – A filet mignon is one of the few steaks that, in my opinion, is improved by wrapping it in bacon. Don’t get me wrong, I love bacon but most steaks can stand on their own. The filet, however, doesn’t have a lot of fat so by wrapping it in bacon you add some of that fat to the equation.
These 7 oz filets are aged 28 days and wrapped in a beautiful piece of bacon. Cook these up rare or medium rare and they will melt in your mouth. The price for these is only $24.50 each when you buy 1, $20.50 when you buy 2-7 steaks, and $19 when you buy more than 8.
Kurubota Pork Bacon – Like the waygu beef the Kurubota pork is the best of the best. This pack contains 1.5 pounds of some nice thick cut bacon. Snake River Farms lightly cures their bacon and then smokes it with hardwood smoke. This bacon runs $25 per pack but when you buy 4 or more the price drops to $22 and then down to $20 if you buy more than 8.
Over the next couple weeks I will be writing up a number of posts as I cook up this meat. I want to compare the Waygu ribeyes side by side with what you would get at the grocery store to show you how great waygu beef can be. The bacon and porterhouse I will want to just cook and eat since they are awesome by themselves and I have some good ideas for the bacon wrapped filets.
And don’t forget, Snake River Farms will ship your order for free with code FREEAFF.
